Last week I had the pleasure of shooting a surprise elopement between two friends of mine. After many months of planning an elaborate wedding and stress levels weighing down the joy, Rachael and Cameron decided to bite the bullet and say, “Screw it. Let’s just do it now!”
Those are my kind of happy endings; the ones that don’t require the bells and whistles that society likes to polish couples up with to prove that they’re in love. It gives me flashbacks to when Xander and I jumped on the marriage train. I pinned photos on Pinterest until my fingers were sore and got heart-eyed over the dumbest little things until I realized that none of that was important to me to begin with. All that mattered was that we had each other and none of the glitter surrounding our marriage made our feelings any more real. Getting hitched in a small, private ceremony without any traditional rules was the best decision we ever made and I’m sure that our friends will find that to be true for them, as well.
In fact, I don’t think that their wedding could have been any more perfect than it already was. These two became one in a cozy backyard draped with big, leafy plants that were nearly translucent during an ultimate golden hour, with stringed lights illuminating the backdrop. A pure bohemian fairytale!
Sometimes life stops you in your tracks.
As I took these photos, I was reminded that there’s something so beautiful within the simple act of loving another human. The greatness that surrounds finding another person out there to share your laughter and goofiness with. The endless support from good friends and families. The warmth of admiration from your children. The realization that is the magic of everything isn’t somewhere in your future, but instead within all that you already have. It was here all along and it was so simple.
So, Mr. and Mrs. Haga, may every day bring you two the same joy and affection that I got to witness on this extra special occasion. I appreciate not only you trusting me with capturing this moment, but allowing me to experience it with you. I love you both, Drogo and Daenerys.
